Oil Change Time!

Posted on

It’s about that time again!   Oil change!   I’m going to try a new oil.   This time I am using Valvoline VR1 Racing Synthetic 20w-50. Ordered it online with a few fresh Mahle OC84 oil filters and they arrived the next day. (Amazon really is amazing). All went smooth and didn’t spill a single drop of oil!   I’m getting pretty good at this.  I have used the conventional dino version of the VR1 but never the Synthetic.  The last oil was the Mobil 1 15w-50 Synthetic and it worked ok but I noticed a bit of oil blow by when starting the car in the morning.  Could be the thinner oil when cold was able to get by the gaps in the rings but once warmed up it was ok.  The Mobil 1 had plenty of zinc and was available at Walmart for $20 for a 5 quart jug.  Great value since the VR1 Synthetic is $10 a quart!   Which makes the cost of the oil change with Mobil 1 about $30 including filter vs $60 for the VR1 Synthetic.  Even at $60 though it’s still a small price to pay for a full synthetic 20w-50 oil with lots of zinc. Because the Amazon option is so convenient and affordable I may look into oils not locally available like the Brad Penn, Redline, Lucas and  Amsoil.
